Johnston Community College Bolsters Support for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Smithfield, NC – November 18, 2024 – Johnston Community College (JCC) is proud to announce its involvement in the Access to Achievement initiative. This state-funded program, established in 2023, aims to enhance employment outcomes for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) throughout North Carolina by providing them with opportunities to obtain credentials, degrees, and diplomas in an inclusive community college environment.
The Access to Achievement initiative has been introduced at 15 community colleges across the state, including JCC, to foster best practices in vocational training, financial and benefits counseling, and promoting accessible and supportive college environments. Through this program, JCC will work to maximize access to its credential and degree programs for individuals with IDD, with a focus on developing their employability skills and offering opportunities for on-the-job training and apprenticeships.
"We are thrilled to be part of this transformative initiative that aligns perfectly with Johnston Community College’s commitment to inclusivity and providing every student with the tools and resources they need to succeed," said Logan Runyon, coordinator for the Access to Achievement program.
"This program offers a unique opportunity for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to pursue their educational and career goals, and we are dedicated to supporting them every step of the way," Runyon adds.
Access to Achievement at Johnston Community College will provide:

  • Vocational training tailored to the needs of individuals with IDD
  • Financial and benefits counseling to ensure students can access the support they need
  • Inclusive environments to promote a sense of belonging and community
  • Person-centered planning to help guide students towards their personal educational and employment goals
