Workforce, Transportation and Tariffs Key Concern for Local Business

The Triangle East Chamber recently conducted a survey of its members to identify the most pressing legislative concerns among local businesses. The results highlight key areas where businesses are looking for policy support and improvements that will strengthen the regional economy.

Workforce development remains a top priority, with 71% of respondents selecting it as a top legislative concern. Survey responses emphasized the need for funding job training programs, strong education pathways, and improved access to childcare. These factors play a crucial role in workforce stability and business growth.

Transportation and infrastructure improvements were also identified as critical concerns by 55% of respondents. Businesses are looking for investments in road maintenance, highway expansion, and public transportation to ensure employees can commute efficiently and goods can move without delays. Reliable infrastructure is essential for economic growth, and survey participants signaled strong support for policies that address these challenges.

Concerns over tariffs and economic stability also stood out in the survey results. Over 69% of respondents support advocacy efforts to reduce or modify federal tariffs affecting North Carolina’s businesses. Many businesses are feeling the impact of global trade policies and rising costs, particularly those that rely on imported goods. Fifty-two percent of those surveyed said tariffs will result in increased costs of raw material and supplies, while 47% said they are concerned about supply chain disruptions. However, 10% of respondents expect a positive impact as they will be protected from foreign competition.

The Chamber’s Board of Directors will use the results of the survey to help formulate the 2025 Legislative Agenda. To learn more about the Chamber’s advocacy efforts click here.
