Smithfield Fire Department Encourages Residents to Prepare for Hurricane Season

Hurricane season officially begins June 1st and continues through November 30th. The
Smithfield Fire Department is encouraging residents to take steps now to prepare for
severe weather before a storm threatens our community.

While Smithfield is located inland, hurricanes and tropical storms can still bring
significant impacts to Johnston County, including flooding, tornadoes, damaging winds,
power outages, and road closures. Preparing ahead of time can help protect families,
homes, and property when severe weather strikes.

"Preparation is one of the most important things residents can do before hurricane
season begins," said Fire Chief Jeremey Daughtry. "Taking a few simple steps now can
make a big difference when a storm is approaching."

The Smithfield Fire Department recommends residents:

• Build an emergency supply kit with at least three days of water, non-perishable
  food, medications, flashlights, batteries, cash, pet supplies, and important
  documents.
• Develop a family communication plan and discuss where to meet and how to
  stay in contact during an emergency.
• Keep vehicles fueled and cell phones charged when severe weather is forecast.
• Secure outdoor furniture, trash cans, and other loose items that could become
  dangerous in high winds.
• Never drive through flooded roadways. Remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown.
• Check on elderly neighbors, individuals with disabilities, and others who may
  need assistance before or after a storm.

Residents are also encouraged to sign up for JoCoAlerts, Johnston County's free
emergency notification system. JoCoAlerts provides important information directly to
residents through phone calls, text messages, and email notifications, including severe
weather alerts, flooding information, evacuation notices, and shelter updates.
