News Release: 6/10/2026

Smithfield, NC –  Johnston County is asking water customers to voluntarily conserve water as ongoing drought conditions and low river levels continue to affect the County’s primary water supply.

The voluntary conservation request is intended to help protect available water resources while ensuring there is sufficient capacity for essential needs such as drinking water, healthcare services, and fire protection.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to reduce non-essential water use whenever possible. Simple steps such as limiting outdoor watering, washing vehicles less frequently, and fixing leaks can help reduce demand on the system.

The advisory is being issued in accordance with Johnston County’s Water Shortage Response Plan and is effective immediately.

While the County is requesting voluntary conservation measures, customers are reminded that Johnston County’s year-round outdoor watering restrictions remain in effect.

Under the County’s mandatory conservation policy, in-ground irrigation systems, hose-end sprinklers, and pool filling activities must follow an alternate-day schedule based on street address.

  • Odd-numbered addresses: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays
  • Even-numbered addresses: Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays
  • All addresses: No irrigation is permitted on Mondays

Pool filling days should correspond with designated irrigation days.

Johnston County Public Utilities will continue to monitor river levels, water demand, and drought conditions and will provide updates as needed.
