Triangle East Chamber of Commerce Statement of Support for Baseball Stadium

Smithfield, NC - The Triangle East Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has thoughtfully reviewed and discussed the potential economic and business impact for Johnston County associated with the Smithfield Tobs Baseball Organization and the opportunity to develop a new stadium in Smithfield. Based on this evaluation, the Chamber offers its strong support for the Town of Smithfield’s investment in this project.

The Board’s discussion affirmed that a modern baseball venue represents a strategic economic development asset with the potential to drive consistent visitor activity, strengthen local business revenue, and generate meaningful returns for the community. Activity associated with the team and related events supports a wide range of industries—from hospitality and dining to retail and service providers—while contributing to the overall economic vitality of the region.

Equally important, the Board recognized the broader community value of this investment. A new stadium would enhance Johnston County’s ability to host events, attract visitors, and create shared experiences that foster local pride and connection. These quality-of-place elements play a critical role in supporting workforce attraction and retention, which remains a priority for our business community.

The Chamber believes this investment aligns with long-term economic development goals by positioning Johnston County as a more competitive and vibrant destination, while also creating opportunities to capture and retain spending within the local economy. With thoughtful execution and strong community partnerships, the impact of this project can extend well beyond the stadium itself.

On behalf of our Board and membership, the Chamber supports the Town of Smithfield’s efforts to move this initiative forward as a meaningful investment in the community’s economic future.
