Leadership Johnston Announces Dr. Martha Jo Asselin as 2026 Leadership Instructor

Johnston County, NC — Leadership Johnston is pleased to announce that Dr. Martha Jo Asselin has been selected to serve as the lead instructor for the 2026 Leadership Johnston program, bringing decades of proven leadership experience, educational expertise, and community development insight to the region’s premier leadership development initiative.

Dr. Asselin has dedicated her career to advancing education, cultivating leaders, and strengthening communities. Over the course of her tenure with the State University of New York (SUNY) system beginning in 1984, she has served in multiple executive roles — including interim president, vice president, and chief executive officer. Known as an innovative and collaborative leader, she has been widely recognized for her advocacy, strategic leadership, and commitment to mentoring emerging leaders.

Currently, Dr. Asselin serves at a major R1 research university as the inaugural director of a center for leadership and service and teaches in the School of Education at the University at Albany. She also consults with organizations nationwide and coaches women leaders seeking to strengthen their influence, confidence, and impact.

Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Sociology from SUNY Oswego, and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration, Leadership, and Policy Studies from the University at Albany. She is also a published scholar whose work explores leadership, crisis management, and governance in higher education.

“Leadership Johnston is designed to inspire informed, engaged, and collaborative leaders,” said program organizers. “Dr. Asselin’s depth of experience — paired with her passion for developing people — will enrich every participant’s journey and strengthen leadership capacity across Johnston County.”

The Leadership Johnston program guides participants through a yearlong exploration of leadership principles, civic engagement, economic and workforce dynamics, and the power of regional collaboration. Graduates join a growing network of community-minded professionals committed to shaping the future of Johnston County.

Dr. Asselin, who now resides in North Carolina, shared her enthusiasm: “Leadership happens at every level — and when leaders are equipped, they create healthier organizations, stronger communities, and lasting impact. I am honored to walk alongside the 2026 cohort as they grow, learn, and lead.”
