Travel Powers the Economy, Builds Opportunity & Connects Communities
Smithfield, NC — During National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) May 4-10th, the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation is proud to recognize the incredible impact travel and tourism have on our community’s growth, vibrancy, and economic health.
"Travel is one of our nation's most powerful economic engines—supporting millions of jobs, fueling businesses, and propelling industries forward,” said U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman. “National Travel and Tourism Week reinforces the pivotal role travel plays in building a stronger, more prosperous America."
Since 1983, NTTW has highlighted how the travel industry contributes to the strength of our economy, the vitality of our communities, and the quality of life we enjoy. In 2024, the travel industry generated $2.9 trillion in economic output, supported more than 15 million jobs, and produced $190 billion in tax revenue nationwide.
Here in Smithfield, tourism is a strong driver of our local economy. Each year, events like the Ham & Yam Festival — happening May 3, 2025 — bring more than 10,000 visitors to Downtown Smithfield and infuse nearly half a million dollars into local businesses. Our restaurants, shops, hotels, and attractions all benefit from the energy and excitement that travel and tourism bring to our town.
Downtown Smithfield is proud to be home to signature attractions and destination businesses that draw visitors year-round, including the Ava Gardner Museum, which welcomes guests from across the globe to celebrate the life and legacy of one of Hollywood’s brightest stars. The Johnston County Museum and Heritage Center also offers a rich, in-depth look at the history and culture of our area, providing visitors with a meaningful connection to Smithfield’s storied past.
"We see firsthand how important tourism is to Smithfield," said Heidi Gilmond, Executive Director of the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation. "Events like the Ham & Yam Festival, along with our wonderful downtown attractions, not only boost our economy — they build community pride and help tell the story of who we are. During National Travel and Tourism Week, we celebrate the incredible value travel brings and the opportunities it creates for our businesses, our residents, and our future."
The Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation invites residents and visitors alike to experience all that Smithfield has to offer during the Ham & Yam Festival — from live music and local vendors to family fun and authentic Southern hospitality.
