High school young women in Johnston County are invited to step into the spotlight and showcase their "spunk and moxie" at the upcoming "The Essence of Ava: Ham & Yam Scholarship Spotlight." Taking place on April 25th, this unique pageant-style competition celebrates more than just grace; it honors the enduring spirit of Johnston County’s own Hollywood legend, Ava Gardner. The winner will be crowned the 2026 Miss Ham & Yam and awarded a $1,000.00 scholarship to further her educational goals.
Redefining the Runway
The competition is designed to highlight the multifaceted talents of local young women. Rather than a traditional pageant, "The Essence of Ava" focuses on how hometown roots provide a foundation for future success. Participants will be judged on:
Public Speaking Skills: Articulating goals and values with confidence.
Sense of Self: Demonstrating the poise and independence Ava Gardner was known for.
Special Talent: Showcasing a unique skill or artistic ability.
Hometown Pride: Celebrating their connection to Johnston County.
Competition Requirements
The event features three main categories: a Question and Answer Panel, a Talent Competition, and a Sense of Self Runway Show. In addition to the live performance, all applicants must submit a video personal essay as part of their entry.
"We are looking for young women who aren't afraid to show off their moxie," says Heidi Gilmond, DSDC Director. "This is about honoring where you come from while having the drive to go exactly where you want to be."
