Readers can use the award-winning Libby app to enjoy digital books on any device!
As people increasingly read and listen to books on their smartphone or tablet, they’re discovering one of the best resources is their local public library. The Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield (PLJCS) and its affiliated branches are excited to announce that starting October 4th, 2021, patrons with an active library card in good standing can borrow a wide selection of popular digital eBooks and audiobooks free by downloading Libby, the award-winning reading app from OverDrive, or by visiting www.pljcs.org/libby.
Dustin Mobley, the Technology Coordinator for PLJCS, served as the Project Manager on the OverDrive implementation. He said, "I'm delighted Johnston County readers will now be able to access the latest bestsellers through the world's premier reading app. Hands down, Libby offers the best e-reading experience available."
Named one of Popular Mechanics’ 20 Best Apps of the Decade, Libby seamlessly connects first-time users and experienced readers with PLJCS’s digital collection. This locally selected, opening-day collection boasts over 5,000 titles, including today’s popular authors as well as many timeless classics.
Readers may browse PLJCS’s digital collection, instantly borrow titles and start reading or listening for free with a valid library card. This service is compatible with all major computers and devices, iPhone®, iPad®, Android™ phones and tablets and Chromebook™. Through Libby, readers can also “send to Kindle®” [U.S. only]. All titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period and there are no late fees. Readers can also download titles onto Libby for offline use. PLJCS now has Samsung tablets available for check out and will have the Libby app already installed for patrons.
The public is invited to bring their personal e-Reading devices to the Smithfield Library for assistance with installation of the Libby app on Monday, October 4, from 9:00am - 5pm. Patrons who show staff they have installed the Libby app will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win free Libby prizes.
The opening-day Libby collection was funded in part by grant funds from the Johnston County Unrestricted Endowment Fund, which is administered by the North Carolina Community Foundation.
