DOWNTOWN SMITHFIELD TO BECOME AN OUTDOOR GALLERY: CALL FOR CHALK ARTISTS & MAKERS FOR JUNE 12th FESTIVAL

SMITHFIELD, NC — The sidewalks of Downtown Smithfield are about to become a canvas. The Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation (DSDC) is officially seeking talented artists for the Sidewalk Chalk Competition and local creators for the Makers Market, both held in conjunction with the highly anticipated Spring Art & Wine Walk on Friday, June 12th.

A $500 Canvas Under Your Feet

Artists of all ages and skill levels are invited to transform assigned 8x8 squares into vibrant masterpieces. Whether you specialize in 3D realism, bold pop art, or intricate patterns, the DSDC wants to see your interpretation of this year’s theme: "Spring Art & Wine Walk."

The stakes are high—one "Best in Show" winner will be awarded a $500.00 cash prize, announced live from the stage during the Liquid Pleasure concert at the Neuse River Amphitheatre.

Competition Schedule:

• 12:00 PM: Check-in & Chalking Begins (Early start encouraged!)

• 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM: Public Viewing & Official Judging

• 8:00 PM: Grand Prize Winner announced at the Neuse River Amphitheatre

Artist Guidelines:

Participation in the Sidewalk Chalk Competition is free. The DSDC will provide a basic 24-count chalk set to each participant, though artists are encouraged to bring their own water-soluble chalk, soft pastels, knee pads, and blending sponges. As a family-friendly event, all subject matter must be appropriate for all ages.

Calling All Makers and Fine Artists

Beyond the chalk, the festival is expanding its footprint to support local entrepreneurs and galleries:

• Makers Market: Handcrafted vendors can reserve a booth space for a $15.00 fee.

• Pop-Up Art Galleries: Fine artists looking to showcase their work in a gallery setting can apply for a pop-up space at no cost.
