Understanding America's Labor Shortage

Finding talented employees is a top concern for businesses in Johnston County. The Triangle East Chamber continues its initiatives to build local talent to fill open positions.

While the Chamber and community partners address workforce development we are often asked what led to our current labor shortage. This week the US Chamber of Commerce released its report "Understanding America's Labor Shortage." This report provides an excellent understanding of the current labor shortage.

According to the report there are 1.9 million fewer Americans working today compared to February of 2020. According to the report of those who lost their jobs during COVID and have not yet returned to the workforce, 27 percent report that needing to care for children is preventing them from working. Compounding that is a lack of access to childcare.

Early retirements, health concerns, and people returning to school have also contributed to the decline in the workforce
