Triangle East Economic Development Foundation Announces Recipients of Business in Need Media Grants

The Triangle East Economic Development Foundation is proud to announce the recipients of the 2020 Business in Need grants. The Business in Need Grant was created to provide advertising avenues for small businesses facing challenges due to COVID-19. Applications were open to any small business in Johnston County.

Four local media groups -- Country Superstars 102.3, InterState Outdoor, Johnston Now Magazine, and the Johnstonian News -- partnered with the Foundation to match the grant amount of $500 in order to support the recipients. All grant winners will now have the opportunity to advertise through the media company they selected.

This grant was made possible, in large part, due to the generosity of attorney Allen Wellons of Wilkins & Wellons in Smithfield, NC.

Mr. Wellons said “The idea of making COVID gifts began when I was Zooming my first meeting with the Rocky Mount Chamber. They were discussing what different local non-profits were doing during the COVID Crisis. One of the ones that I was interested in was the specific
fund created to help local restaurants but it turns out this was a State fund supported by Jim Goodmon’s WRAL-TV and my contribution would not have been significant. I did give to several of the other nonprofits that were on the Zoom and began thinking more of what I could do. I then saw the Johnstonian News story about the local theatre’s problems during the pandemic. I called Mike Mancuso (of the Triangle East Economic Development Foundation and Triangle East Chamber) and told him I would like to start a local fund for local businesses including the Howell Theatre owner that could be administered by the Chamber. My thinking was the Chamber could administer these funds without any overhead and would know the needs of the local businesses that are truly our neighbors. After Mike and I worked on some guidelines by telephone, I made my first gift on April 21st to begin the fund and afterwards did the same with the Clayton Chamber on June 23rd and Rocky Mount Chamber on July 1st using the same
guidelines.”

The recipient of the first grant was the Howell Theatre in Smithfield, NC. The recipients of the 2020 Business in Need media grants are: the Ava Gardner Museum, Artmosphere Community Arts Center, Beachside Home Service, JL Customs, The Gilded Pear Brew House, Medicaltraining.me, Mucho Mexico, the Oak City Collection, O'Meara Realty Group, Princeton Day Care, Salon 29:11 & Day Spa, Selma Jewelry.
