Town of Selma to Hold 5th Annual Polar Bear Run 5K Live, Not Virtual

Selma, NC: The Town of Selma Parks and Recreation Department announced today that it will host the 5th Annual Polar Bear Run 5K LIVE in downtown Selma on January 16, 2021.

“We will conduct our popular 5K Polar Bear Run safely,” stated Parks and Recreation Director, Billy Roach.  “We will have two run times available for the public.  One group of 50 runners will start at 9am and another group of 50 runners will start at 11am.  Social distancing outside will be enforced, and a separate spectator section will be roped off for those that are encouraging runners but not actually running.”

Selma’s 5K route is known for being flat and fast.  Runners can clock a good time and since this is one of the first runs of the year, they can get their New Year’s Resolutions started off right.

“Well behaved pets are welcome to participate, and this has always worked out well in the past years.” Roach continued.

Runners will need to register online.  There is a $10 fee per runner and pets are free.  Awards will be given for the first 3 runners across the finish line for each time slot.  A special award for the first pet across and one more “surprise” award will be given for each time slot.

This will be the 2nd year that the Parks and Recreation Department will partner with the Johnston County Animal Services.  Donations of supplies, food and cash will be accepted at the check-in desk on the 16th.  For a list of needed donations, please visit the event web page at  For more information about the Johnston County Animal Services, please visit their website:

Rain date for the run will be on Sunday, January 17th same times.
