Neuse Charter freshmen host second annual 5K

By: Shannon Mann

For the second year, the Neuse Charter School freshman class will host a “Couch to 5K” color run on Sat., Nov. 5th, 2016 starting at 10am.

The class and community fundraiser started in 2015 as a way to encourage health and fitness among Neuse Charter students, while increasing stamina and endurance in rising athletes.

“We noticed across-the-board cardiovascular issues among our youth,” said Gail Browning, middle school PE teacher. Browning said the PE teachers and coaches noticed that many middle school athletes weren’t ready for the rigorous endurance needed in high school sports.

Browning and Chase Crocker, another NCS coach and PE teacher, put together the idea to host the annual color run that would incorporate a multitude of lessons for the freshman class.

Not only does the overall 5K help with fitness, but freshman are learning about fundraising, marketing, event coordination and teamwork while earning a physical education grade for the project. Lessons in nutrition, hydration and stress management are also included as part of the project.

The course, which will be on the Neuse Charter School campus, will host three color stations in which runners will be sprayed with temporary paint, however runners can also opt not to be sprayed.

Prizes will be awarded for the finishers of different age categories and opportunities exist to sponsor the event. A fun run will follow at 11am for younger participants.

Costs for participants vary, but the freshman class is encouraging everyone to register by Oct. 28th for the best price.

NCS freshman can run for $5 with registration prior to Oct. 28, 2016. Other NCS students and staff pay $15 prior to the deadline and community runners, supporters and parents pay $25. Registration will cost $30 for anyone registering after Oct. 28th. All runners will receive a t-shirt.

Registration forms can be picked up at the school’s front office or by emailing Coach Browning at  Checks for the race should be made payable to Neuse Charter School with “5K race” in the comments and dropped off in the front office.

Monies raised from the event will cover race expenses and go to a need determined by the class.
