Johnston County Intersection Requires Temporary Closure

Contractor is building a roundabout on N.C. 42

CLAYTON – Contract crews will close an N.C. 42 intersection to complete a new roundabout.

The highway’s junction with N.C. 96 east of Clayton will close after 11 p.m. Sunday. The roadway is expected to reopen by the end of September.

Although traffic has recently been moved into the roundabout ahead of this closure, a contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation needs to complete paving, install curb and gutters, pour the concrete traffic islands and place permanent pavement markings while this intersection is closed.

Signs will be posted to detour traffic onto other, nearby state-maintained roads. Drivers should prepare for a longer commute during the closure, and approach the work site cautiously if they must travel near it.

NCDOT awarded the $3.4 million construction contract last year to improve the safety and traffic flow of this intersection, as this NCDOT website illustrates.
