'Inspired' CWBN raises $13,000 for scholarships
By Sherry Harris, Chair of the CWBN Committee
I remain in awe of the inspiring Chamber Women’s Business Network event on Tuesday, November 19. With an outstanding moderator (Debra Morgan, anchor with WRAL-TV) and panelists, JoCo Golden Girls entertainment, sponsors, food, vendors, and audience, we can truly say it was an enjoyable time.
Yes, we cried, laughed, and even sang “Taking Care of Business.” And, hearing the challenges and successes shared by the panelists will instill in us the importance of “hanging in there” and “never accepting failure.”
What we learned from our panelists…for Lori Lee, who founded a nonprofit foundation after witnessing children and families struggle for resources while her own son was hospitalized, success is knowing that the Me Fine Foundation now makes a tremendous impact in the lives of so many. For Carrie Peele, who painted one of her service limos pink in honor of a friend dying of cancer, success is front and center -- failure is not in her vocabulary. For Stephanie Beasley, success is finding her biological mother and brother and thriving all while paying down $10,000 in educational loans. And, for Crystal Roberts, success is caring for and sharing with others even when the loss of a job and spouse were immediate challenges.
Gratitude is owed to so many who have supported the CWBN since its inception. The CWBN Committee is fabulous – hard working women who plan, coordinate, and implement events. Our sponsors and vendors are tremendously gracious, and those who attend events are so appreciated. Also, the Chamber staff provides great support to the Committee in many ways.
The CWBN’s net profits fund scholarships for women seeking additional education. In 2014, we will award nearly $5,000 in scholarship funds for a total of $13,000+ since CWBN awarded its first scholarship!
If you have not been involved with CWBN or attended any CWBN event, I encourage you to find out more about our happenings. We are a vibrant part of the Chamber!
Until we see you at the Chamber Holiday Open House on Tuesday, December 17 (hosted by CWBN), take care and be inspired!
