Carolina Pottery has been a favorite home store for over three decades. Company founder Dick Fleming owned a Howard Johnson's hotel franchise off of I-95 in Smithfield, NC. During some of their travels he and his wife Jean came across several "pottery concept" stores and liked the idea. He decided to open a similar store in Smithfield to help be an attraction and draw in more customers for his hotel business. Carolina Pottery was opened in a 50,000 sf building on I-95 in Smithfield, NC in 1983. It was an immediate success and became a destination for interstate travelers in North Carolina. Carolina Pottery currently has 4 locations, in Smithfield, NC, Columbia, SC, Augusta, GA, and Myrtle Beach, SC, and is still a family owned and operated small business.
