The NC Department of Transportation has agreed to rename a stretch of interstate in honor of the Carolina Pottery founder. The DOT will name a section of Interstate 95 from Exit 95 in Smithfield to Exit 97 in Selma in honor of Dick Fleming.
Dick Fleming founded the first Carolina Pottery store along I-95 and donated land for the Smithfield-Selma Chamber of Commerce visitor's center on Industrial Park Drive.
Mr. Fleming's vision of retail outlet shopping is credited by his supporters for transforming the Smithfield-Selma stretch of I-95 into a thriving commercial district.
Last year, Johnston County Commissioners along with the Towns of Smithfield and Selma adopted resolutions in support of the naming.
The DOT along with local officials and dignitaries, will hold a Dedication Ceremony renaming the 2 mile stretch of I-95 Dick Fleming Freeway on Friday, March 22 at 10:00am at Johnston Community College in Smithfield. Fleming’s relatives will be on hand for the event.
