DESCRIPTION:The Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation and The Herald are hosting the third annual Christmas Window Display competition for Downtown Smithfield businesses this holiday season. The competition entitled "Return of the Magic\," will give downtown businesses an opportunity to express their creativity and the voting public will have a chance to win some extra Christmas cash at the "Christmas Cake Dive" to be held at the Smithfield Tree Lighting on Thursday December 6.\n\n \n\n Many downtown businesses will be "decking the halls" for the competition. After viewing the window displays\, the public will be able to vote for their favorite at the Christmas Tree Lighting. Ten voters will be randomly selected to participate in the Christmas Cake Dive where they will "dive" into cakes that contain prizes from downtown businesses. Every cake will contain a prize\, but just one cake will contain downtown cash and prizes valued at more than $500.\n\n \n\n Two businesses will win the competition\, one by popular vote and one based on a juried vote. Both winning businesses will receive a quarter-page color ad in the in The Herald.\n\n \n\n "With the success of past window display competition\, we're excited to host it again\," said Chris Johnson\, Executive Director of the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation. "With the addition of the Christmas Cake Dive at the Tree Lighting\, it will only add to the excitement of the Christmas season."\n\n Along with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting\, which will be held at 6:30 p.m.\, Thursday\, December 6 at the corner of Third and Market streets\, Downtown Smithfield is home to several other special events during the holiday season. The Christmas Parade will travel down Market Street beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday\, December 13. Free carriage rides with Santa will be offered at the corner of Market and Third streets from 7:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Friday\, December 21.
