Transportation Takes the Spotlight as Leaders Look to Johnston County's Future

Transportation and commuting challenges took center stage at the 2025 State of the Region Breakfast, held last week at the Johnston County Ag Center. Presented by Lumos, the event drew a packed room of business and community leaders eager to hear what’s ahead for Johnston County and the region.

Using Mentimeter, attendees engaged directly with panelists: David Harris, Director of the Johnston Regional Airport; Joey Hopkins, Secretary of Transportation for the State of North Carolina; Josh Jensen, Director of Community and Senior Services (operator of QuickRides and JCATS); and Karin Stamy, General Counsel of the North Carolina Railroad. The discussion was moderated by Joe Milazzo, Executive Director of the Regional Transportation Alliance.

The event came on the heels of Joey Hopkins’ recent announcement that he will retire later this year, making his insights into the state’s transportation priorities particularly timely.

Panelists highlighted opportunities such as the economic development grant program offered by the North Carolina Railroad, as well as expansion projects at Johnston County Regional Airport.

Mr. Jensen also shared details about QuickRides, Johnston County’s microtransit program. Microtransit is an on-demand shared ride service that uses vans to provide flexible transportation within defined areas. For many guests, this was their first time learning about QuickRides, which debuted in March 2023.
