Public Utilities Water Pant Expansion Ribbon Cutting May 4th

The Town of Smithfield Public Utilities Department will hold its Water Plant Expansion ribbon cutting on Thursday, May 4th, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.  

The expansion, produced at a cost of $17.6 million, increases the facility’s capacity by 34% to 8.3 million gallons per day and will enhance operational efficiencies to meet the growing water demand in Smithfield. The Wooten Company provided engineering for the project and Shook Constructing performed general contracting services. 

Improvements to the water plant include: 

New one million gallon in-ground water storage tank 

New in-ground backwash tank 

Expanded reservoir 

New 4th treatment filter 

New pumps for filter backwash, raw water, and processed water New electrical room for greater process controls 

New generators for emergency power 

Tours of the facility and light refreshments will be served following the ribbon cutting.
